From its opening moments, West Side Story announced that it was not going to be just another lighthearted Broadway musical. Its dark themes, sophisticated music, ambitious dance sequences and focus on social problems heralded the dawn of an emboldened new era of musical theatre. The show was created by a dream team of top theatre artists: director and choreographer Jerome Robbins, playwright Arthur Laurents, lyricist Stephen Sondheim and composer Leonard Bernstein.  With the help of the 1961 Oscar-winning film adaptation, West Side Story has become an American classic that is just as relevant today as it was when it took Broadway by storm in 1957.
